SVL is excited to announce the opening of its new state of the art surgical suite in our GLP compliant research facility.
Surgical Suite
The surgical suite contains two operating tables for simultaneous procedures on small and large animal species. Designated areas for animal preparation and recovery are conveniently located adjacent to the operating room. A four (4) station necropsy suite and various laboratory spaces are also available.
Contract Research
SVL’s highly trained veterinarians, principal investigators/study directors and AAALAS certified technicians are available to assist with as much or as little of your study as you desire. We can assist with all aspects of your study from IACUC and Study Protocol development to Final Report Writing and even planning the details of your stay for out of town visitors (see below). Our veterinary surgeons are available to perform your procedures or your own team of surgeons can use our facilities while our technicians provide pre- and post-operative care.
Research Animals
SVL is experienced in housing a wide variety of small and large animals including mice, rats, guinea pigs, ferrets, rabbits, mini-pig, sheep, goat, and NHP. All purpose bred research animals are housed in our AALAC accredited (since 1989) facilities. All small animals are housed in our indoor specific pathogen free barrier. Both indoor and outdoor housing is available for large animals. SVL has extensive experiencing handling biohazardous test articles characterized as BSL-2.

All equipment is regularly maintained and operated according to SVL Standard Operating Procedures in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices. Available equipment includes but is not limited to the following:
Test Article Storage
SVL takes great strides to maintain client confidentiality and ensure that all sponsor test articles are stored in secure storage areas with limited access. Each test and control article is assigned a unique identification number to further protect sponsor confidentiality. Storage is available at ambient, 4oC, -20oC, and -80oC. All storage conditions are continuously monitored.
Additional Services
SVL’s on-site clinical pathology laboratory can provide immediate hematology, serum chemistry and coagulation factor determinations.
SVL’s on-site archive storage can provide secure storage of data, materials and/or samples.

SVL’s research facility sits on a 100-acre campus in a country setting conveniently located 45 – 60 minutes north of NIH, Bethesda/Rockville and the I-270 Corridor, 30 minutes east of Frederick, MD and, 30 minutes west of Baltimore, MD. Nearby airports include Baltimore Washington International (BWI) located 30 minutes away and Washington Dulles International (IAD) located 60 minutes away. On-site accommodations in a historic farm house allow easy, comfortable, and 24/7 access to the research facility.
